5th Ecumenical Pilgrimage for Climate Justice 2020

BREAKING NEWS: Due to the decision of the British government to postpone the UN climate conference COP26 until next year, the Climate Pilgrims decided today to cancel this year’s 5th Ecumenical Climate Pilgrimage for Climate Justice. However, we will try to complete this project in 2021, so we continue our planning efforts.

This year’s UNFCCC world climate conference, COP26 will take place from November 9-19, 2020 in Glasgow. There, the international community must sharpen the results achieved in Katowice in 2018 and submit its long-term climate protection plans. And of course the weak completion of Madrid’s COP25 to be overcome.

The climate pilgrims have decided to take a very long and media-effective hike to Glasgow. A planning group set the following cornerstones for this climate pilgrimage:

  • Find a starting point in Poland, to beginn the hike with the support of the Polnish Ecumenical Council. (23 AUG 2020)
  • Cross the border in Forst (Lausitz) (or begin the pilgrimage in Forst in case the preceeding is not possible) (27/28 AUG 2020 ).
  • The pilgrimage shall end in Glasgow (UK) , 7 NOV 2020, short before the COP26 is going to start.
  • To optimise the duration, a ferry shall be taken from IJmuiden (NL) to Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK) instead of walking to Bruxelles and taking a train.
  • If possible, the daily legs shall not exceed 25 km (15.5 mi) with an average of about 20km (12.4 mi).
  • The route shall be a good mix of spiritual experience including pain points and places of power as well as safe walking, and being seen and recognized by people.
  • In larger cities and locations tbd the climate pilgrims shall stop for a day to
    • visit schools and meet children,
    • meet polititians to discuss our mission,
    • give presentations,
    • get informed by companies/groups/etc. about their climate saving actions,
    • demonstrate.
  • An action day to be planned for a Sunday un Münster.

Assumptions:

  • A start on Sunday, 23 August 2020 would give us 76 d (2 months and 16 d).
  • A start on Friday, 28 August 2020 would give us 71 d (2 months and 11 d).
